Stumpy has been conditioned to do her business on command. When I tell her to "hurry up" She heads down into the yard, does her business and returns to me for a treat. Recently, I realized that, often-times, she['s returning a little quicker than normal, so I made a point of watching her. If she really has to go, she generally just goes where I can see her, no messing around , just gets down to business. If she doesn't have to go, she runs down off the deck, runs around the truck and around the corner and returns for her treat. it only took me about a month to figure out what she was up to. Sneaky little dog.
Yup! I've been fooled (yet, again) by my dog.

Hahaha – that is so funny !
Our old girl, Opy, used to do the same thing – we used to call it "the fake wee" :)

On this subject, we are wondering how to train Winston to go as soon as we take him out. Now we usually end up walking for 10-15 minutes..that will not work in the freezing winter months. Any suggestions?

Always take Winston to the same area (Stumpy is finicky and requires this area to be cleaned, frequently) on a leash, and use some encouraging words and lots of praise/treats/toys (whatever turns Winston on) when he goes. If he doesn't go, it's back in the house and into the kennel/crate. Take him back out (to the same area) in fifteen minutes, or a half an hour or so. Rinse and repeat. It won't be long before he understands the command you choose and the reason your going to that particular area and what you mean when you tell him to do his business. When I was first conditioning Stumpy for this behavior, she didn't get her walk until after she did her business. that was also part of the reward. It won;t be long before you can lose the leash, he will run from the door to his potty spot and back (often without going potty!)
The benefits to this training are huge! Only one area in the yard to clean. The training translates to doing their business, anywhere, if you're traveling. It's especially useful when your running late, it's raining/freezing outside or time is limited.
Also, if you're out walking carry Winston's reward and use the command/praise/reward when he does his business while walking.
Stumpy's command is "hurry up" I've heard some funny ones though!

Dexter is the first dog I have ever had who WILL NOT learn to pee on command. Sheesh. Even Mango gets it. Not to mention I swear the little guy only pees twice a day, if that.
I spent a lot of time rewarding him for doing his potty, but he started doing the same trick as Stumpy. If I ask him if he wants to go out he will go out, kind of wander around, and come in for his treat. Even if I supervise him, he sometimes won't leave the deck. Just wants that damn cookie. Hopeless.
The result is that he sometimes can have a super emergency (like at 1 AM when he hasn't pee'd since who knows when) and then he just paces. He is very shy about asking to go out even when it is time to play. Doesn't run to the door like a normal dog, just sits and stares at me. Sigh. He is otherwise perfect.

That is too funny! I think the little dude might be intimidated by the overpowering Mango smell in the yard. Even though our back garden is about half an acre, I have no doubt that every blade of grass smells of Mango. When Mango pees, well, let's just say it covers a wide arc.
Dexter is never shy about pee'ing on walks or when I take him places. In fact he is known at doggie daycare for dropping a big poo first thing before he lets any of his friends play with him.

Molly must have a bladder the size of a bath. She can hold on for absolutely ages, but always makes herself comfortable before bedtime.
Taffy is a typical boy and likes to go outside quite frequently. He lets us know whenever he needs to go out by making chuffling noises by the back door. Never taught him to do this, he just does it.
Monty starts to pace a bit if he needs to go outside. He is very good at night when we let them out before bedtime. I only have to say "Be a good boy" and he has his last piddle of the day.
Winnie is starting to copy her big sister and is obviously working on expanding her bladder!
